We have a pleasure to invite you to this year’s Autonomous Bookfair Wrocław which is taking place on 17th and 18th of September in the Reanimation of Culture Centre (Centrum Reanimacji Kultury).
This year we would like to take a few steps back and focus on a broad topic of D(o) I(t) Y(ourself), ‚self-doing’ things. It’s very close to home for us as we publish zines – but we don’t intend to limit anyone to this aspect only; we’d rather rethink the ways we can use the DIY ethics/strategy in every aspect of our lifes and our activity. How (or if) can we regain control of our lives by ‚self-doing’ things? How does one ‚DIY’ – without using ready-made elements and blueprints – not only punk or handcraft, but also relationships, self-care, places we live in or (anti)politics? How can DIY be reclaimed from the clutches of capitalism, which has appropriated it for itself? These are just a few of the questions that may be answered at our event – and we hope others will ask many more.
So, what’s our idea of this Bookfair? We’d like to bridge the gap between the creator and the viewer, the publisher and the reader, the presenter and the participant. Instead of reinforcing a capitalist spectacle of performers (producers) and viewers (consuments), we want to encourage everyone to participate equally, to both create and receive at the same time. Doing things yourself, in our opinion, may help regain control over one’s life and subjectivity; and we would like to provide some kind of substitute for that to all those participating in the bookfair.
So if you are willing to create this event with us:
fill in our entry form – answer the questions and we’ll reach out to you to work out the details. If you have your own publishing project, no matter how big and refined, if you have ever created a zine or wrote a poetry volume or if you are into some interesting stuff and want to share your knowledge and experience – you are more then welcome to join us! We encourage you to submit the most participatory forms possible – workshops, discussions rather than lectures – or plan them in such a way that they don’t turn into a lecture;
or just come by! If we’re successful in doing what we are trying to do, your presence and participation will be as much of a contribution to this Bookfair as ours and all the people who contact us.
Together (and with our own hands) we will surely create something cool. See you soon!
